A Guide to Brunch

Brunch with friends at 801 Restaurant in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is home to so many delicious restaurants that serve brunch. Whether you are a college student or young professional there’s a trendy spot you and your crew can hit up to perfectly end your weekend. Brunching in D.C. is truly an art. Before I came to college I thought of brunch as literally just that … brunch. Little did I know that this would be a Sunday ritual.

Choosing the perfect brunch group is important, but the least of your worries. You could either be going out with your girls/bros, co-workers, girlfriend/boyfriend, parents, and the list goes on. Once the group has formed it’s crucial to find a place that will accommodate you all and match the “vibe” you’re going for.

I say it’s important to match your vibe because there are so many different places to choose from. I personally shoot for a place that has bottomless mimosas as well as traditional brunch food.

Desmond Andrews, a senior journalism major at Howard University, said that she tries her best to spend as little as possible when going out. She mainly goes to brunch to bond with her friends and because she’s in college she prefers to go to restaurants with a buffet so she can get more for her money.

“I like going to brunch mainly to catch up with my friends because I don’t really see them too much during the week,” Desmond said. “And my favorite place to go is Barcode and other restaurants like it because it’s buffet style so I can eat as much as I want.”

Bottomless mimosas are the key to a successful brunch. The mimosas can range from $15 to $30 depending on where you choose to dine. Of course, the pricier places have a larger range of food, which I like because sometimes I don’t want just bacon and eggs, I may be in the mood for actual lunch food like a burger or even salmon.

Recently I went to The Park at 14th for brunch, which is pretty random because if you’ve heard of this spot, you know it’s a club. It was super lit though; they had hip-hop playing so that already set the tone and that made it a truly enjoyable place to eat as well as have fun. Not to mention I had jerk chicken and waffles. All I can say is wow because that jerk chicken was bomb.

If you are still wondering how to find the perfect place to brunch then factor in these options. If music is a priority then that will certainly be a determining factor for you. Most restaurants settle for generic instrumentals while others opt for popular songs by artists such as Cardi B. or The Weeknd.

Another factor is the demographics. The type of people that attend brunch where you may be interested in could sway your opinion. I personally wouldn’t want to be sipping on mimosas with people as old as my parents there or at a restaurant where kids are crying and carrying on.

Kameron Mickens, a senior at Temple University, expressed that he only goes to brunch on special occasions.

“I haven’t been out for brunch since the summertime, mainly because it was my friends birthday,” Dickens said. “Other than things like that I prefer to eat at home.”

Outfit choice is also very important. If you choose to go to a basic diner you’ll be wearing jeans and flats, which is fine, but for brunch you want to really pop out. Restaurants such as Le Diplomate and Barcelona have a more upscale vibe. At the pricer and more sophisticated restaurants you’ll want to have a cute outfit on, that includes heels of course. And let’s be real, brunch wouldn’t be brunch without an Instagram post to show for it.

Leidy Garcia, a professional makeup artist from Philadelphia, explained how important it is for her to get Instagram photos wherever she goes.

“Anytime I have on a full face and my outfit is bomb I make sure to take a picture,” Garcia said. “I may not take a picture at the restaurant table but if there’s a cool area of the restaurant or a flower wall outside, I make sure to get my pictures.”

College students have adapted to this lifestyle quickly and I’m sure their parents are wondering how they are able to afford this but one thing’s for sure: today’s generation knows how to find a way or make one.
